Is it ok to enter into a Poke war?

Only if they started it.

And do avoid poking anyone you are not formally acquainted with. It’s annoying. Unless they are ‘fit’.

This is an issue that interests me as a student and user of this technology… My impression is that Facebook is still being rendered meaningful by all the institutions and interests that are only now coming to adopt it. It used to be a supplement to the undergrad-dormitory networks, with all the courtesies associated with that set. I don’t think that’ll be supplanted by everyone and their mother signing up, but I’d wager that there are concurrent sets of ‘proper conduct’ on Facebook depending on the social connections that are being exercised. A booze-fuelled wall-posting on a supervisor’s wall will likely always remain verboten.

But for the life of me, I still can’t figure out what the hell a poke is supposed to mean….
