#568 I’m not sure why…

Dear Mariann,
I’m not sure why, but there are some people – who have very few or no friends in common with me on Facebook – who choose to Friend me. And without a message. I’m sorry… I ignore those. Should I also add my own message?

No need to be sorry. Delete and go with a flourish of keyboard activity and steely glint in your eye! Have you been proposed to in this way yet? That would be the height of vulgarity.

In short, this is a timing thing. If you are one of the feckless one’s who are Friending without ‘knowing’ someone – in whatever context; met at a party, know through friends of friends etc. then you are in danger of stepping outside the bounds of regular meeting and greeting. In short you’re about to get creepy. Would you go up to a stranger in the street and simply shake him by the hand with no context as to why? Perhaps if this were Johnny Depp. Mr Depp aside, if you do not know them, do not friend them.

IF you do, at least offer an opener with a message. Something like ‘Hi! I want to be your friend! I am not a psycho’ should suffice.

(FYI Mr Depp, feel free to Friend me).
