Dear Mariann,

There is a woman on Facebook who I adore but she is currently spoken for so I must be subtle and respectful with social media. I find myself wishing she had a ‘like’ button on Facebook, so I could subtly indicate my interest. Am I a product of the Facebook age?

From Decidedly Cautious via pfbe submission form.

There are generally accepted modes of behaviour through that social media.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Vyne, more+ (but never Google+) and our digital devices should not be overlooked as conduits to those we love, nor the way in which they can constitute both public (as in The Public domain) and private experiences.

I believe in true love. Sounds like you do too, so connecting to Her is perfectly fine. But, you must not impinge upon Her personal space when you do this. If you force close proximity, as can happen on social media, and also irl such as when viewing YouTube over anothers shoulder on the tube during rush hour, then you must not cross the line or polite conversation.

On the Tube this would be creepy. On social media this would be crass.

But a little lightness in Her life from you could never be unwelcome. Unless you’re ugly. Or smell. Or ugly and smelly.

But if you’re fabulously wealthy this will make up for everything and she will be up for anything*

*this blog post by no means guarantees that She will be up for anything, but it’s worth a try.
